Before an Off-Leash Dog Walk: A Practical Checklist
Plan a safer off-leash outing with local-rule checks, recall, supplies, and consideration for other trail users.
Start with the place
Look for the current posted rules at the trail or park. Some locations require a leash year-round or at certain times. Weather, wildlife, trail conditions, and the presence of other users can change whether an outing is suitable.
Think about your dog
An off-leash outing depends on reliable recall and a setting suited to the individual dog. If recall is uncertain, use a legal leash option and keep practising in appropriate spaces. A dog who is worried by other dogs or people may need more distance and a different route.
Bring the basics
Carry water, cleanup bags, identification, and a leash even if the location permits off-leash activity. Stay close enough to intervene and keep your dog from disturbing wildlife or approaching people and dogs who have not welcomed contact.
After the walk
