First Week With a New Puppy Checklist
A calm, realistic checklist for setting up a puppy’s first days at home.
Before arrival
Set up a safe resting area, puppy-appropriate food, bowls, identification, a leash, cleanup supplies, and a few suitable enrichment items. Ask the source of the puppy for current food and care records.
Day one
Keep introductions quiet and give the puppy time to explore a small, safe space. Offer a consistent place to rest and take regular opportunities for bathroom breaks.
The first week
Build a simple routine for meals, rest, play, and gentle training. Reward the behaviour you want to see. Arrange a veterinary appointment to discuss your puppy’s individual care, vaccinations, and local risks.
What to write down
Keep feeding instructions, records, questions for the vet, emergency contacts, and observations in one place. Sleep and house training take time; progress is rarely linear.
